How StarTime works
Every time and date on StarTime is worked out for your town and your day. Here is how, and the rules the site keeps to.
How the times are worked out
The day starts at sunrise in your town, worked out for its latitude and longitude. The positions of the Sun, the Moon and the grahas come from a modern ephemeris, read in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. Tithi, star, yoga and karana, rahu kalam and the other parts of the day are counted from those positions and that sunrise.
Two reckonings
These are Thirukanitha times: computed from the sky as it is. Many temples and wall calendars follow the Vakya panchangam, which works from older tables, so a star's end or a peyarchi day can differ from it by minutes or days. Where the two give different peyarchi days, both are shown. Tamil month dates follow the printed calendar's rule, so the first of the month is the day your wall calendar shows.
What we keep to
- Times and charts are free, and need no sign-in.
- A difficult time is said with what can still be done, never as a threat.
- No price is shown beside a warning, and no countdown hurries a decision.
- Remedies are described free; no stone, puja or ritual is sold.
- No advertising and no tracking scripts; personal details are never sold or shared.
- If you are going through a hard time, Tele-MANAS answers at any hour on 14416.
When a time looks wrong
Under each day's times is a link, "Is this time wrong?". It opens a short form with the town, the date and the time already filled in. Tell us what your calendar or temple prints; each report is checked against the sky and against printed almanacs, and corrections are added to the accuracy checks with their date.
