A south-facing house is a good house; about one house in four faces south. The heavy side vastu speaks of is the south part of a plan, where bedrooms and storage go. Which way the house faces is a different question.

This direction reads as Earth. That is where its placements come from: a room goes where its element goes, which is why the scheme holds together rather than being a list to memorise.
