Varjyam
Four ghatikas of each nakshatra are set aside as varjyam, at a point the texts fix separately for each of the twenty-seven. Nothing new is begun in it. Because a ghatika is a sixtieth of the nakshatra rather than a fixed clock span, the window runs about an hour and a half and shifts with the Moon.
Amrita kalam
Amrita kalam is the counterpart, and the texts treat it as the most favourable stretch of the day for beginning something. It is measured the same way, from the same nakshatra.
Computed from NASA JPL DE440 with the Lahiri ayanamsa — a Thirukanitha reckoning. Sunrise uses the apparent horizon (−0°50′), the convention Indian panchangams publish, so these timings should match a Thirukanitha almanac to within a minute. If yours is a Vakya panchangam the tithi and nakshatra end times will differ, sometimes by hours rather than minutes. Neither is a mistake: they are two traditions, and this is the one we compute.
