Porutham (Jathaga Porutham / Nakshatra match) is the traditional South Indian method of judging marriage compatibility from the bride’s and groom’s Moon nakshatra (birth star) and rasi (Moon sign). Ten factors are scored for a total of 36 points — covering health and prosperity (Dina), temperament (Gana), progeny (Mahendra), the bride’s wellbeing (Stree Deergha), intimacy (Yoni), Moon-sign harmony (Rasi), rasi-lord friendship (Rasiyathipathi), attraction (Vasya), and the safety and longevity of the bond (Rajju & Vedha).

Porutham — also called Jathaga Porutham, Nakshatra match or Tamil marriage matching — compares the Moon’s nakshatra (birth star) and rasi (Moon sign) of two people across ten factors. It is the traditional South Indian method for judging marriage compatibility, scored out of 36 points.

Traditionally, a total of 18 out of 36 (50%) or more is considered acceptable, and 60%+ is a strong match. Rajju and Vedha poruthams are given special importance — a failure there is often weighed more heavily than the raw total.
