Choghadiya for Chennai, Tamil Nadu

The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight, and the night into eight more. Each part carries the quality of the planet it belongs to. Nothing here is a prediction; it is the same division a printed almanac gives, for this place and this date.

Gowri and choghadiya together

A Tamil or Telugu almanac divides the same daylight into the same eight parts and calls them gowri.

Both call these parts of today good: to , to , to .

On 4 of the eight daylight parts they read differently.

How this is worked out

The eight parts are eighths of the real day and the real night, so they are different lengths except at the equinoxes and every boundary matches a published almanac. Which name falls where is not arbitrary either: the day begins on the weekday's own planet and steps through them in the order the horas run, and the night begins on the fifth planet from that one. Seven names across eight slots is why the first one comes round again at the end.

Char is a good period, and the one for setting out on a journey.
